Brazil

The two longest vacations of my life were in Brazil in 2018 and 2019. Here are a few images from 2018.

Several students at the Rio & Learn Portuguese language school in Copacabana and their friends marched with the Paraíso do Tuiuti samba school at Carnaval 2018. It was an experience my marching buddies Alan and Koji (and I) will never forget! This YouTube video clip of our section of the 3,000+ marchers begins at 27:50. The members of our contingent, "Escravos da Ganha", which starts at 29:05, are in bright yellow, green, and blue costumes, the colors of the Brazilian flag. You might even be able to pick me out. I'm a bit right of center in a gold vest and pants and a wild green and straw hat.

Total Solar Eclipse

Oregon, August 2017
​I hadn't witnessed a total solar eclipse previously and didn't want to miss the one that swept across North America from coast to coast. My sister and brother-in-law were also enthusiastic about witnessing this rare phenomenon. So, on Google Satellite View, I plotted the best vista point on a remote mountaintop in Ochoco National Forest; we packed camping gear and food in their 4WD vehicle; and off we drove to Central Oregon. My sister took an amazing video of the event that really captured the emotion of the moment.

New Orleans Jazz Festival

April 2018
​One of Stan's and my Philadelphia high school classmates, Bob, recently married a Brazilian man, André. They had given us a tour in February 2018 of their southern Brazilian city, Curitiba. We all decided to get together in April during Bob & André's U.S. road trip that would take them to NOLA during the famed Jazz Festival. Notice our Central High caps and T-shirts!

Across The City ...

I can see the Golden Gate Bridge, located exactly 10 km (6.2 air miles) from my deck. When I see the bridge, I always think of the Jeannette MacDonald song, in her eponymous  movie with Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy.
