In 1982, the University of California, San Diego designated the first clinic in the San Diego area to serve the health needs of gay and lesbian patients as "The Owen Clinic" in honor of William F. Owen, Jr., M.D.

 

On October 13, 1988, at its Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, the American Society of Internal Medicine named William F. Owen, Jr., M.D. as the recipient of its 1988 Special Recognition Award, in honor of his work with patients with human immunodeficiency virus.

 

In June, 2000, Dr. Owen was honored with the annual Gay Pride Community Service Award by San Francisco PBS affiliate KQED.

 

In January 2004, San Francisco Magazine named Dr. Owen as one of the best HIV/AIDS doctors in the San Francisco Bay Area.

 

In January 2005, San Francisco Magazine named Dr. Owen as one of the top primary care physicians in the San Francisco Bay Area.

 

In its Winter/Spring 2006 issue, Bay Area Consumer Checkbook named Dr. Owen as one of the top-rated primary care physicians in the San Francisco Bay Area.

 

At its 35th anniversary meeting, in June 2012, Bay Area Physicians for Human Rights (BAPHR) named Dr. William Owen as "Visionary of the Decades".

 

Dr. Bill Owen has also been elected by his peers for inclusion in Best Doctors in America® from 2003 to 2012.

 

In January 2019 the Global HIV Program at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital presented Dr. Owen with its Community Physician of the Year award for pioneering work in LGBT health and HIV/AIDS care.
